The Khasi Students Union (KSU), Narpuh Circle members today went and shut down two cement companies in East Jaiñtia Hills district after a woman was terminated and another was not employed under compassionate grounds.

The KSU led by its circle president Ohibait Dkhar locked the entrance, the office rooms and the weighbridges of the JUD Cement Ltd and Goldstone Cement Ltd after talks failed.

According to the KSU, one Ribancy Chyrmang an employee since 2009 was terminated from the JUD cement company with no valid reasons. While two letters were served to the company by the KSU seeking her reinstatement, it was not taken seriously, Dkhar said.

The KSU members also went to the Goldstone Cement-Black Tiger Cement Ltd to seek employment for one Marvel Nangbah after her father, an employee of the company died while in service.

Dkhar said the students union has no other option but to shutdown the company as the DGM-HR, Deepak Umar Panda was not forthcoming in ensuring that Nangbah will be employed but said that the company would pay his family Rs 4000 a month.

While the company suggested that Nangbah should complete his ITI training the student members did not agree to the suggested made stating that the issue was taken up by them on May 8, 2020.

Meanwhile, three hours after the shut down it is learnt that the companies succumbed to the pressure of the KSU and reinstated Chyrmang and employed Nangbah.
