The Khasi Students Union (KSU) and Federation of Khasi, Jaiñtia and Garo People (FKJGP) have called on East Jaiñtia Hills police to set up a special investigation team to probe two similar murders of teenage girls in the district in the space of three months.
The body of a 16-year-old school girl was found along with her school bags and books from a forest at Ar Kilo village on Saturday. Family members said that she was missing since March 12 after she went to school.
In December, another teenager from Sohkymphor went missing and was later found dead. It is suspected that both victims were also raped.
These twin outrages have “created fear in society, especially among women and children,” the pressure groups said in a letter today to the Superintendent of Police.
“Maybe due to unforeseen circumstances in your department, the investigations were delayed and the culprit was not arrested in the earlier case. As such we believe that the culprit was encouraged to commit these crimes against minor girls,” the letter added.
