Khliehriat Civil Hospital is in the news for wrong reasons. The 100-bed hospital, which was upgraded from a community health centre, was inaugurated in February last year has always been the subject matter for the people in East Jaiñtia Hills district.
From lacks of proper medical equipments and infrastructure the hospital is seen as a failure to deliver quality healthcare services to the patients.
This time, the hospital chose to stop admitting patients due to choked sewage and water pipelines. Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal acted on complaints from the public and carried out an inspection yesterday to find the hospital in a sad state of affairs.
Terming the decision to stop admitting patients as “drastic action” Baranwal said, the hospital did not inform his office or the health department.
He said explanation has been sought from the DMHO and plumbers have been arranged from Khliehriat PHE to repair the water pipelines.
It may be mentioned that last week the Jaiñtia Students Union (JSU) protested against the deficiencies in the upgraded hospital and erased its name, terming that the upgrade was not in actual reality, when it has no resources to function effectively and provide adequate healthcare services.
Ever since its inauguration the hospital had faced severe criticisms as people complained of the lack of key staff and equipment at the Khliehriat Civil Hospital. Taking note the district administration had procured a ultra sound machine through the corporate social responsibility initiative of the North East Transmission Company Limited.
Prior to the upgradation the hospital does not even have a simple x-ray machine after developing faults for about five to six years then.
The upgrade is now seen as a cosmetic affair when all is not well inside the 100-bedded hospital.
