Jowai, Jun 12: In observance of World Blood Donor Day, the office of the Jowai Civil Hospital Blood Centre, Panaliar, honoured dedicated voluntary blood donors for their invaluable contribution to society.
The felicitation programme was held at Tpep Pale Community Hall in Jowai on the theme, ‘One Drop of Humanity, Give Blood. Save Lives’.
Dr I Khyriem, Senior Medical and Health Officer, expressed concern over the decline in voluntary blood donation in the district which has dropped from 29 percent in 2024 to 20 percent in 2025. She called upon government departments, educational institutions, community organisations and youths to organise awareness programmes and blood donation camps to increase voluntary blood donors.
Dr Khyriem also emphasised the importance of voluntary blood donation in ensuring the availability of safe and quality blood for patients in need.
Many patients suffering from chronic illness, including chronic kidney, cancer and various blood disorders, require regular blood transfusion. Since these patients often have weakened immune systems, they are entitled to receive safe, standard quality blood that is readily available whenever required. She noted that the Blood Centre’s primary objective is to ensure that blood is available, accessible and safe at all times.
Assistant Commissioner Emelya Ch Momin lauded the selfless contribution of voluntary blood donors, describing them as the real-life heroes of society whose noble acts help save countless lives. Every unit of blood donated brings hope and offers a second chance at life for those undergoing surgeries, mothers during childbirth and patients suffering from serious illness and blood disorders.
Others present included the Principal of Thomas Jones Synod College, Jowai, Ailynti Nongbri; Job R Kawini of Adventist Youth Ministries; and Cheiniwanki Niangti, voluntary blood donor; Jowai Dalloi Puramon Kynjing; prominent senior citizens, voluntary blood donors, representatives of various organisations and health workers.
