Following many complaints by residents under Elaka Sutnga relating to an alleged registration of up to 21 lakh square metres (215 hectares) as one plot of land in the region, the Jaiñtia National Council (JNC) met the Chief Executive Member of the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) Thombor Shiwat.
The JNC expressed shock that the land has been allowed to be registered under one plot when, as per the rules of the JHADC, a plot can only measure a maximum of 1 lakh square metres.
The pressure group questioned how the Executive Member in charge has issued such a permit without conducting a ground survey and it suspects underhand means.
The JNC said that CEM is ignorant about the matter and has demanded an inquiry and ground survey so that small landowners owning property within the 21 lakh square metres will not be affected.
The group has also threatened to file a case in the High Court if the JHADC fails to look into the matter.
