The International Day for Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) was observed in Eastern West Khasi Hills today.
The theme was ‘Transformative solution for inclusive development: the role of innovation in fuelling an accessible and equitable world’.
The event was attended by Deputy Commissioner W Nongsiej in the presence of District Social Welfare Officer of West Khasi Hills District, VC War, and others.
In his speech Nongsiej said that PWDs are not to be seen as people with disabilities but people with different abilities.
Director of Makarious Medical Centre, Mairang, Dr M Syiem, in his speech called upon the gathering to be compassionate towards the disabled and called for a change in mindset by viewing people with special needs through the special talents and abilities that they possess.
The programme featured medical check-ups, games and sports, Aadhaar registration for PWDs of the area and aids and appliances were also distributed by the dignitaries to the disabled people who attended the programme.
