Shillong, Sep 24: Eastern West Khasi Hills police have secured convictions in four cases falling under Mairang Police Station, including three under the POCSO Act.
In a press release, the Superintendent of Police said one Hoping Mawlong was convicted for aggravated sexual assault on a minor and sentenced to 20 years rigorous imprisonment under Section 6 of the POCSO Act with a fine of Rs 50,000. In default of payment of fine, he will have to undergo an additional six months imprisonment.
In two other cases, where the accused were minors in conflict with law, the matters were tried by the Juvenile Justice Board, Eastern West Khasi Hills, under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015.
As per orders passed on September 7 and September 10, the Board found both juveniles guilty under relevant sections of the POCSO Act and imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 on one and Rs 2,000 on the other to be paid to the victims. The Board also directed that both undergo counselling till they attain 21 years of age and complete six months of community service under supervision.
In a case related to grievous assault, one Borda Kharnongbak who was earlier acquitted of charges of attempt to murder was found guilty under Section 324 of the IPC. He was sentenced to the period already undergone in custody and fined Rs 10,000, in default of which he will have to undergo six months imprisonment.
The convictions reflect the commitment and hard work of Eastern West Khasi Hills Police to ensure safety and security of children and to bring offenders to justice and deliver justice to victims, the SP said.
