Nongpoh, Oct 12: A suspected improvised explosive device (IED) was discovered on Saturday evening near the residence of former MLA Nehlang Lyngdoh in Umsning, triggering alarm among locals.
Ri-Bhoi Police rendered the device safe and subsequently diffused it.
The incident occurred at around 7pm on Saturday when Ri-Bhoi Police received information about an unclaimed object. Under the direction of Senior Superintendent of Police VS Rathore, officers immediately cordoned off the site and secured the scene.
Lyngdoh is a former MLA of Rymbai in what is now East Jaintia Hills. He most recently contested the Khliehriat seat, finishing second on a National People’s Party (NPP) ticket. He and/or his family are heavily involved in the coal trade. However, it is unknown whether Lyngdoh was the actual target. The area is in the local market and in front of a Meghalaya Rural Bank branch.
To prevent panic and any untoward incidents, senior police officers and other officials quickly moved to the location and notified the bomb squad in Shillong. The bomb squad team arrived and carried out a controlled disposal according to established procedures and safety protocols. The teams successfully neutralised the IED without any loss of life or damage to property.
Speaking to reporters after the device was rendered safe, Rathore confirmed that the object was indeed an IED. He said initial technical analysis found the device contained approximately 4.7kg of gelatine explosive, around 100 detonators and about 50 pieces of iron rods intended as shrapnel.
Rathore added that, during the course of the preliminary inquiry, police have identified individuals believed to have placed the device at the location. Investigations are ongoing, and strict action will be taken.
The public has been urged not to spread panic and to report any suspicious items or activity immediately to the police. All materials recovered from the site have been seized and are under examination as part of the continuing investigation.
