A girls’ hostel constructed through a special assistance from the centre through the Tribal Affairs Minister at Rs 2.50 crore was inaugurated in Mawkyrwat. South West Khasi Hills district today.
Local MLA and Social Welfare Adviser Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar, Deputy Commissioner Tableland Lyngwa and Director of Social Welfare Department CD Lyngwa attended the inaugural function.
In his speech, Tongkhar said that the Social Welfare Department has provided best services for the welfare of the people of the district such as the establishment of the girls’ hostel and Hope Orphanage. He hoped that with the support of district administration, a rehabilitation center for drug addicts will also be set up in the district in the near future.
He extended his gratitude to the Presbyterian Church of Mawkyrwat for generously contributing the land for the construction of the hostel building.
The Deputy Commissioner emphasized that achieving development requires a collective endeavour involving the government and all stakeholders, including village representatives, NGOs, and faith-based organizations.
He said that the hostel would serve as a temporary residence for working women and students visiting the district for educational purposes or for other works and services.
Informing that the hostel will be handed over to the Presbyterian Church of Mawkyrwat to manage and take care of getting basic infrastructure, the Deputy Commissioner also said priority would be accorded to individuals hailing from remote areas within the district and within the state.
Social Welfare Director in her speech mentioned that faith-based organizations have collaborated closely with the state government in implementing various initiatives and mission-mode programs aimed at assisting the marginalized sections of society.
She also spoke about the Meghalaya Early Childhood Development Mission (MECDM), aiming at enhancing the Anganwadi centers and ensuring nutritional support through Self-Help Groups (SHGs). Additionally, she informed about the Drug Reduction, Elimination, and Action Mission (DREAM), and Early Child Development Mission focusing on cognitive development.
Additional Deputy Commissioner and Project Director of DRDA L. T. Tariang, Mawkyrwat headman RR Lyngkhoi and District Social Welfare Officer E. Tariang also spoke on the occasion.
