Members of New Dawn Meghalaya’s Ri-Bhoi unit today expressed grave concern over the failure of the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) in providing regular power supply to the Nongpoh area, to the detriment of the public.
New Dawn’s district president Ulrich J Mawlong and general secretary Favourable Sylliang met the Sub Divisional Officer (SDO) of MeECL to express their concern over various power issues in the district and district headquarters.
After the meeting, the duo said that the organisation was compelled to take up this issue for the welfare of the people of the district, who frequently faced hardship due to irregular power supply.
New Dawn also asked the state-owned power utility to look into the many rusted electricity poles in the district that pose a danger to the people; one person recently lost his life after coming into contact with fallen live wires in Umshaken.
The SDO informed that the department is facing a manpower shortage, which has been the main reason for monsoon-related disruption in supply and that the department has yet to receive sanction for new electric poles.
