Meghalaya recorded its first two Covid-19 deaths of the new year on January 3, the Health Department informed today.
Komal Das (59), of Rilbong, Shillong, was admitted to Shillong Civil Hospital on January 2 and tested positive for the virus there. He died the following day of Covid-19 pneumonia with hypertension and nephropathy (a disease of the kidneys).
Pandavkuri (49), of Mawbah, Shillong, was admitted to Shillong Civil Hospital on December 23 after being referred from Nazareth Hospital. Diagnosis was Type 2 diabetes with pulmonary tuberculosis, post-Covid pneumonia and sepsis.
The total number of Covid fatalities in East Khasi Hills is now 115. The district’s fatality rate is 1.38 percent.
There were also 25 new cases and 12 recoveries reported today.
Of the new cases today, East Khasi Hills accounted for 24 and South Garo Hills one.
In East Khasi Hills four new infections were among returnees, three were in Jhalupara, two each in Umpling and Barapathar and one each in Laban, Laitumkhrah, Lapalang, Madanrting, Happy Valley and Mawprem.
The recoveries were reported from West Garo Hills (six), East Khasi Hills (five) and Ri-Bhoi (one).
In all, Meghalaya has had 13,506 Covid-19 cases, of which 149 are active, 13,216 have recovered and 141 have died from the virus. The recovery rate has declined to 97.85 percent while the fatality rate has increased to 1.04 percent.
The Health Department also informed that around 1,700 Covid tests were carried out in the state in the last 24 hours.
