Shillong, Oct 27: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) today closed the Shillong Peak Ropeway project under construction from Madan Laban to Shillong Viewpoint.
The reason for the council’s halt on construction is that the company implementing the project has not obtained a trading licence from the KHADC.
Chief Executive Member Winston Tony Lyngdoh said the company has not taken note of the council’s requests for a trading licence, which has prompted the KHADC to take this decision.
Speaking to the media, after asking the closure of the ropeway project, the CEM said that two show-cause notices were served to the company implementing the project for operating without a trading licence first in May and again in September this year.
“After we served the show-cause notices, they replied they will comply within seven to ten days to the requirements of the district council. But till date they have not obtained an NoC (no-objection certificate) from the authorities to apply for trading licence,” Lyngdoh said. “If they have all the required documents we will process their file but if they can’t provide us with all that’s required the site will be sealed.
The CEM said that they have to set an example by sealing off the site so that other companies from outside the state in the future cannot trample on the authority given to the district council.
“This is a clear message to all companies that they can’t just come and start working on the projects without obtaining a trading licence,” he said.
