The Meghalaya High Court has declined to legally intervene into the recent collapse of the central dome over the proposed new Assembly building at New Shillong.
During a hearing of a public interest litigation (PIL) on the matter today, the division bench of the High Court said that it is for the State government to take appropriate action against the builder and to find out if the matter pertains to apparently faulty construction or design.
“The court does not deem it proper to rush into the case immediately and without allowing the appropriate authorities to deal with the matter in accordance with law,” the High Court said.
It may be noted that a city resident Pawan Sharma has filed a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking the High Court’s intervention on the dome collapse.
Sharma also stated that the collapse of the dome made headlines in all newspapers and there has been constant bickering since then. He also mentioned in his petition that there is a high-powered committee which has been put in place to report on the causes and, possibly, suggest the remedial measures that may be taken.
While disposing of the PIL, the High Court also gave liberty to any public spirited individual to raise the issues again, in the event they are not appropriately dealt with by the administration.
