Jowai, Nov 19: A crime review conference to assess the prevailing law and order situation, review crime trends, and strengthen coordination among concerned departments and agencies was organised by the West Jaintia Hills District Legal Services Authority.
A total of 70 participants, primarily comprising police personnel engaged in criminal case investigation and prosecution, attended the conference held yesterday.
The conference featured in-depth discussions on law enforcement challenges, inter-agency cooperation, and updates on legal procedures, with particular focus on the implications of Supreme Court judgments guidelines such as Arnesh Kumar v. State of Bihar, a landmark judgment from 2014 that established guidelines to curb arbitrary arrests and others.
The sessions emphasised the importance of proper arrest protocols, protection of individual rights, and coordinated investigation strategies.
The conference was chaired by Chief Judicial Magistrate-cum-Secretary, DLSA DG Kharshiing and attended by District and Sessions Judge, Special Judge POCSO, Superintendent of Police, District Medical and Health Officer, Scientific Officer, Mobile Clinic Forensic Crime Scene Unit, Directorate of Forensic Sciences, Public Prosecutor and Special Public Prosecutor and representatives from the District Social Welfare Office and the District Prison and Correctional Home.
