Following allegations of encroachment leveled against Meghalaya by Assam’s Border Protection and Development Minister, Atul Bora, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma today said that there will always be individual sentiments but that is why state level border talks are so important.
Bora, in the ongoing Assam Assembly budget session, said that Meghalaya has encroached on 3,441.86 hectares of Assam’s land.
Sangma said, “Emotions are there. Whether they’re right or wrong, that’s not what I’m commenting on but it’s the person’s individual perspective. When it comes to the talks, it is between two governments and therefore the two governments will ultimately decide. Individual level people can make comments. I have no comments to make.”
Asked if the claim of encroachment is true, the CM said that he is not sure of which area Bora was talking about. There are six major areas of difference between the two states (another six have already been resolved in the first phase of the border resolution negotiations) with both sides claiming land that is in control of the other.
