A seven-day skill up-gradation training program on carpentry organised by the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Community and Skill Development Centre, Wahiajer, a constituent College of the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU).
The training was aimed to equip young people and locals with necessary vocational skills for economic independence and sustainable livelihood.
Thirty participants from diverse community groups received training through practical demonstrations and interactive sessions led by invited resource persons. The participants gained valuable insights and knowledge in essential skills related to the carpentry trade and its establishment.
The program concluded with a valedictory function, which was attended by Prof. H. Lamin (Retd.), Founder Principal I/c, DDUCC in the presence of Dr. F. R. Sumer, Librarian, NEHU, Reveal Singh Phawa, Resource Person, and Thrangki Stong, Supporting Staff.
In their speeches, the guests emphasised the importance of learning carpentry fundamentals and urged participants to use their newfound knowledge to improve their skills. They noted that carpentry is a highly skilled and specialized occupation, sparking interest and passion among the youth in Meghalaya.
They said such training programs are urgently needed, as carpentry is essential for design, construction, and renovation. They encouraged participants to pursue further training, adopting new technologies to create sustainable opportunities in the expanding market.
The program is part of DDUCC’s and NEHU’s efforts to advance skill development and vocational education under NEP 2020. Certificates were awarded to participants, marking the event’s conclusion.
Program Coordinator Wolnish Rymbai expressed gratitude to those present and recognizing the benefits of DDUCC’s ongoing skill-development programs. He noted that these programs have empowered community members by providing real-world skills necessary for self-sufficiency.
