The body of a taxi driver, believed to have jumped into Umiam Lake was recovered today by the emergency service personnel.
Yesterday a local taxi (ML 05 Y 7753) was found abandoned on the Umiam bridge at around 4:30am. Police searched the vehicle and found that the car keys had been left in the vehicle along with a mobile phone and man’s jacket.
This led the authorities to suspect that the driver, Skhemborlang Kharmawphlang of Mawlai Mawtawar, had jumped from the bridge into the reservoir in an attempt to take his own life.
Police said that the body was recovered at around 11:30 am. The family had sought post mortem exemption and his body was handed over to them after formal investigation was complete.
