As part of their ongoing awareness program on menstrual cycles, hygiene, and dispelling taboo beliefs, the NGO JCI Kamrup Elite visited Shillong Balika Vidyalaya Secondary School today.
The initiative, under the theme “Let’s Make a Difference,” was aimed to educate and empower young girls.
A team of doctors and health professionals from JCI Kamrup Elite conducted informative sessions for the students, addressing the menstrual cycle and proper hygiene practices. The program emphasized the importance of breaking the silence and stigma surrounding menstruation, encouraging the girls to share accurate information within their communities.
Speaking to Dr Mobika, a private practitioner in Shillong said the JCI is organising the awareness program with regard to menstrual cycles. She said that many awareness programmes were conducted in different places, but menstruation is the first time, as it’s still a taboo in the society.
She also said that more awareness programs should be conducted about menstruation, HIV, sex, educating the children.
In addition to educational presentations and explanations, sanitary pads were distributed to the students, ensuring they have the necessary resources to manage their menstrual health. The event was well-received, with students expressing gratitude for the valuable knowledge and support provided.
This visit marks a significant step in JCI Kamrup Elite’s mission to promote menstrual health and hygiene education, fostering a more informed and supportive environment for girls.
