Shillong, Jul 22: The Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the KHADC, Tony Winston Lyngdoh, stated that the Syiem of Hima Langrin, Nongtei Sing Syiemiong, was reinstated after an inquiry report was thoroughly studied by the district council.

“After our Executive Committee (EC) came into power in 2025 we sat along with the officers and after seeing the inquiry report and we investigated and explored the case and we found out that there are no serious allegations against the traditional chief and we felt that he should be reinstated as the Syiem of Hima Langrin,” the CEM stated.

He stated that the magistrate who conducted the inquiry is from the district council court located in Mawkyrwat, South West Khasi Hills.

“Through the inquiry of the magistrate we found out that there is nothing serious to prove the allegations against Nongtei Sing Syiem,” the CEM added.

On demands by people who gathered in the premises of the KHADC today to remove the reinstated Syiem within 15 days, the CEM said that he met the aggrieved group but they never told him about the ultimatum.

“We had invited them for talks. They should have told us about the 15 days ultimatum,” Lyngdoh said.

On claims by the group that the inquiry was not done properly, the CEM said that this was a serious allegation. “If they say that, it is like undermining the position of the magistrate of the district council. We will have to take action against such statements,” he added.

Syiemiong was suspended by the KHADC in 2023 pending an inquiry over certain allegations made against him.

Earlier in the day, hundreds of residents of Hima Langrin marched to the KHADC demanding his removal from the position of Syiem.

The protesters said their demand was aimed at ensuring good and transparent governance in Hima Langrin and urged the district council to take the matter seriously and act in accordance with the relevant rules and regulations.
