The Achik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM) has sought admission of all eligible students to class 11 at Adokgre Higher Secondary School as most students belong to underprivileged families who cannot afford to seek education outside their locality.
In a letter to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, AHAM said that out of 120 students who applied for admission into class 11 at the school this year, only 50 students were selected leaving 70 students without the opportunity to continue their education.
Stating that the students belong to underprivileged families, AHAM said denial of admission to these deserving students may lead to serious consequences. Without access to education, these young individuals may be pushed towards antisocial activities, including drug abuse and immoral practices, which will ultimately harm the fabric of our society, it added.
Calling for an increase in the intake capacity by introducing additional sections such as morning, day, and evening shifts the organisation urged the government to construct additional classrooms, recruitment of qualified teaching and to ensure equitable education rights for underprivileged students in their own locality to prevent school dropouts.
