Editor,
Another “certificate” for the abysmal performance of the State education sector is absolutely shocking and absolutely horrendous to say the least as per PGI index rating. Blame it on the previous education minister who played to the gallery and did absolutely nothing to improve and support many critical issues concerning the education system.
Another foremost part is the absence of a regulatory body to regulate school and college fees that hit the roof every year end, which the Khasi Students’ Union since the time of Mr. R C Laloo had spoken off but every government doesn’t care a damn.
There are students from various backgrounds who excel in their rural schools but find it so difficult to get admission because of exorbitant capitation fees and high cost of books. There is a scheme of book grant that supports students but when it comes to disbursing the same every academic year it has to pass a litmus test from the State education department.
Another factor is the low absorption of digital technology and IT education in rural schools, some fortunate ones get an opportunity to study in any private institutions while others don’t have the opportunity. Then we have teachers sloganeering on the streets to demand their wages, God help us if there is another street dharna.
So the point is, do we still have to fight on flimsy issues instead of focusing on improving the education system for the future or should we busy ourselves in political antics?
