Editor,
I was flabbergasted by the news report that the BSF had been directed by the home ministry to explore the feasibility to deploy snakes and crocodiles in riverine areas along the India – Bangladesh border to curb infiltration and smuggling. Following demonetisation, the abrupt lockdown with only four hours’ notice, and the hurried SIR, this is yet another attempt to jeopardise the lives of the common people. Treating the poor like termites has become such a new normal, there is a callous disregard for the fact that crocodiles and snakes cannot distinguish between Bangladeshis and Indians living close to the international border. Moreover, no country can indiscriminately kill even infiltrators or deny them their human rights.
