Shillong, Oct 24: A skill-based training programme on food processing concluded at the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Community (DDUCC) Skill Development Centre hall in Wahiajer today.
The initiative forms part of DDUCC and NEHU’s broader efforts to advance skill development and vocational education in alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
The training programme was organised by the community college, a constituent of the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) wherein around 50 participants were trained in the processing and production of popular food items such as ice-cream, ketchup and hot sauce, chilli oil and mayonnaise, candies, jams and marmalade, almond and cashew butter, among others.
The training was conducted by Alim Pariat, who shared his expertise through engaging theoretical lectures and practical demonstrations. The lively and interactive sessions provided participants with valuable knowledge and hands-on experience in food processing and related entrepreneurial skills.
Directorate of Soil & Water Conservation Department Director Lamjingshaihun Shabong attended the valedictory function in the presence of Prof. S. K. Barik, Dean, School of Life Sciences, NEHU, Shillong, Dr. F. R. Sumer, Principal (In-Charge), DDUCC, Sanwotki Laloo, Headman of Wahiajer and others.
Shabong emphasised the importance of skill upgradation programmes in opening avenues for sustainable livelihood and entrepreneurial growth. Congratulating the participants, he urged them to explore further skill development opportunities in areas connected to environmental conservation, given the rich biodiversity of the region.
He also encouraged them to engage with local farmers and adopt eco-friendly farming practices such as Zero Budget Natural Farming and plant-based mission projects initiated by the State government, which can foster eco-tourism development in the district and the state.
Shabong assured both technological and financial support for the centre’s future development initiatives.
To mark the successful conclusion of the training, certificates of participation were awarded to all participants.
