Khliehriat, Jul 29: The East Jaiñtia Hills District administration has launched a football-based intervention programme for recovering drug addicts.
The programme themed, “Goal Beyond Addiction,” was inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner Shivansh Awasthi at Narwan Upper Primary School, which marked the beginning of a weeklong futsal tournament aimed at promoting physical and mental well-being among recovery addicts.
Awasthi highlighted the district administration’s commitment to combating drug abuse and cited the success of previous awareness programmes and the seizure of large quantities of drugs by the police department.
He announced plans to set up a de-addiction centre in the district and highlighted the importance of engaging individuals involved in substance abuse in alternative activities like sports.
Sub-Divisional Officer Manish Kumar stressed the need for community involvement in fighting drug abuse, emphasising that every case of addiction represents lost aspirations, hope, and broken families and communities.
The programme featured the distribution of kits, jerseys, and shoes to participating recovery addicts.
The weeklong tournament aims to facilitate the management of withdrawal symptoms, reduce cravings, and improve the overall physical and mental well-being of participants.
