The Hynñiewtrep Youth Council (HYC) pushed back migrant workers engaged at various project sites in New Shillong Township.
Members of the HYC today conducted its self-sanctioned checking of construction sites and said from over 400 migrant workers, 200 were working without a registration card from the labour department.
According to the HYC, some of the workers have brought their family to reside at the construction sites while others could produce only the acknowledge slip of registration.
Employers must ensure that rules laid by the Meghalaya Identification, Registration (Safety & Security) of Migrant Workers Act, 2020 and Meghalaya Identification, Registration (Safety & Security) of Migrant Workers Rules, 2020 must be strictly followed, it said.
The HYC said registration of workers is vital in the face of illegal entry from Bangladesh and criticised the government stating it failed to implement measures to safeguard its citizens.
