Around 7731 learners from different parts of East Jaintia Hills district cleared the ULLAS (Understanding of Lifelong Learning for All in Society) assessment test, marking a significant step towards literacy.
ULLAS is a centrally sponsored scheme for a period of five years, from 2022- 2027 to promote lifelong learning and bridge the gap in basic literacy and essential life skills for citizens aged 15 and above.
East Jaiñtia Hills district targets to enrol 12,000 non-literate citizens by 2027 through the transformative initiative.
A meal under the theme, “A Step Towards Literate India” was organised by the office of the District School Education Officer (DSEO) at Khliehriat West Community Hall on April 24.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Jacqueline U Kharpuri in her address stressed on the importance of educating adult citizens and said that education is a tool which empowers individuals to identify malpractices and in managing their businesses efficiently and reiterated on the commitment of the government to empower all citizens with education even as she urged the gathering to encourage other community members to join the ULLAS programme.
Pointing out that farmers contribute to the economic growth of the state and country, she underscored the importance of accounting literacy and digital literacy to empower all adult citizens by providing them with access to information, communication and digital tools.
District School Education Officer (DSEO) A.P. Syiem emphasised on the significance of the programme, highlighting its impact on individuals who were previously unable to read and write and expressed satisfaction on seeing the enthusiasm of older people in joining ULLAS.
Syiem also commended the tireless efforts of the Education Department particularly Special Educator and District Nodal Officer, ULLAS, Salanbor Kamar for his exceptional efforts in promoting the programme and propelling ULLAS’ success.
State Centre for Literacy- State Literacy Mission Authority (SCL-SLMA) consultant Barikor Syiem spoke on the importance and functions of ULLAS.
