Voting for Shillong and Tura Lok Sabha constituencies in Meghalaya will be held on April 19 and in all, 22, 17,100 voters are eligible to exercise their franchise.
Meghalaya Chief Election Officer, BDR Tiwari informed that against 10, 94, 947 male voters, there were 11, 22,150 female voters. There are three voters registered as transgenders.
The total number of new voters added as per January 5, 2024 is 56,909, while the total number of persons with disabilities is 11,179.
The state also has 23,793 voters who are 80 years of age and above and 10, 345 voters who are more than 85 years of age. In addition, there are five NRI electors.
Tiwari informed that there are 3,512 polling stations, out of which, 326 are in the urban areas and 3,186 in the rural segment.
He said the Election department plans to have 60 polling stations to be managed by women and 37 by the youths.
The CEO also informed that 60 polling stations will be Model Polling Stations.
He also stated that 2,399 polling locations will have one polling station, 466 with two polling stations, nine with three polling stations, 33 with four polling stations, three with five polling stations and one with six polling stations.
Tiwari also informed that the notification for the polling will be issued on March 20, last date of filing of nominations is March 27, scrutiny of nominations will be held on March 28, and last date for withdrawal of candidature is March 30.
The state has two Lok Sabha Parliamentary constituencies, Shillong and Tura.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the total percentage of votes polled in both the constituencies was 71.43 per cent. The Shillong Parliamentary seat, recorded 65.48 per cent voting while, Tura seat recorded 81.38 percent.
Meanwhile, with the announcement of the polling date by the Election Commission of India, all the district administrations has prohibited any person or group of persons from carrying money above Rs. 50,000.
Agitations in any form by any individual or organisations have been prohibited and all license holders have been directed to deposit their arms and ammunition to the nearest Police Station/Outpost/Beat-House.
