Shillong, Jul 3: The Garo Hills zone of the Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) has sought an extension of the mid-term school break, stating that the current duration is inadequate for teachers to fulfill their responsibilities effectively.
In a letter addressed to Commissioner & Secretary Vijay Mumar Mantri, the FKJGP stated that the fast-paced routine without sufficient breaks leads to burnout among teachers. They argue that an extended mid-term break would not only benefit educators but ultimately enhance the learning experiences for students as well.
The mid-term break for schools across the state began on July 1, for institutions that completed their mid-term examinations by June 30, with regular classes to resume on July 6.
FKJGP education secretary Jaksram A Sangma said that teachers across the state were deputed for the House Listing phase of the Census from May 16 to June 14. After this assignment, they resumed academic responsibilities and conducted mid-term examinations until June 30 followed by evaluation of answer scripts, tabulate marks, prepare progress reports, and conduct remedial planning, tasks that demand considerable time and concentration.
“A break of only five days does not permit adequate rest nor completion of the above academic work. Continuous engagement in official and academic duties without recuperation may lead to burnout and affect the quality of teaching,” Sangma stated.
He said by allowing teachers necessary time to recharge, there is a chance for increased effectiveness in teaching.
The FKJGP requested the department that a minimum mid-term break of three weeks be sanctioned for all schools to ensure completion of evaluation work and to provide genuine rest after the non-academic duties of teachers, such as census and election assignments.
Additionally, the organisation wants district-level consultations with teachers’ bodies be held before finalising examination schedules and holidays to ensure feasibility at the ground level.
