The Jaiñtia National Council (JNC) has urged the government to consider the historical context and cultural practices of the Pnar people when resolving the border dispute with Assam.
Addressing a press conference here today, JNC President Sambormi Lyngdoh, “We have our own identity, our own history, and we want the regional committee of both governments to respect our historical background, traditional beliefs, and settle the border dispute based on historical background.”
He said that the Pnar villages currently in Assam can be relocated to Meghalaya depending on the customs and traditions of the Pnar tribe.
On the alleged threat made by the Karbi Students Association, Lyngdoh said, “Their recent statement that a Manipur-like situation will happen if they lose their land to Meghalaya is a threat, which the government of Meghalaya should intervene.”
He further urged the state government to establishing a force to safeguard the Pnar people in response to the threat.
