The Mawkyrwat circle of the United Democratic Party (UDP) yesterday elected its new office bearers for its executive committee, women’s wing and youth wing.
President of the UDP’s South West Khasi Hills unit, Ranikor MLA Pius Marweiñ, administered the oath to the new office bearers in the presence of the UDP’s joint secretary, GG Bung Snaitang.
The president of the executive committee is Shaiñkorlang Nongsiej and the secretary is SK Budnah. The president of the women’s wing is Shidalin Marngar and secretary Luckydora Lyngkhoi. The youth wing president is Elevenson Wanniang and secretary Bhalumlang Kharlyngdoh.
In his speech, Marweiñ rubbished the idea that the strength of the regional parties extends only up to Khanapara, ie the Meghalaya border. He said that the UDP is not only strong in Khasi-Jaiñtia Hills and Ri-Bhoi but its influence is also felt in Garo Hills.
The UDP is the third-largest party (behind the National People’s Party and Trinamool Congress) in the state Assembly and the biggest regional party. However, it has no MLAs from Garo Hills, though it is hoping to return a few at next year’s state elections.
Marwein encouraged the members of the area to work harder and not to be duped by other parties that will come with various promises during election times.
