Angered at the slow progress of the upcoming Damra – Bajengdoba road in North Garo Hills, the GSU – Northern Zone has complained to the deputy commissioner of the district seeking the immediate speeding up of its construction.
The work of construction on the road has been allotted to one Badri Nath Private Limited and began last year. However, despite the urgency of the repairs and reconstruction of the road, the company has been going extremely slow in working on the road.
Currently only a few of the company’s employees and labourers are working on the road with a few heavy machines being used. The situation became such that even the chief minister, Conrad Sangma had to seek an answer from the company about when work was to seriously start.
“The slow progress of the construction has caused huge discomfort to the people of the district. It has become a major inconvenience to the people that use the road on a daily basis,” said the NGO through their letter.
Taking the problems of the people into consideration, the NGO has served a 15 day ultimatum to the company and the PWD department for the start of construction.
“The roads are deplorable to say the least. This is true for both the link as well as the main road. The company needs to start construction or we will be forced to agitate to get the work rolling,” they added.
The NGO later met the project manager of the Badri Rai company as well as the executive engineer of PWD – NGH to push their point across and express their anger at the delayed construction. A field inspection was also taken by the GSU members across the roads of NGH.
