To observe the Pan India Awareness & Outreach Programme as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, the Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority (MSLSA) organised a legal awareness programme on transgender and their legal rights at Shillong Law College here today.
The programme was organised in collaboration with Lamjingshai Manbha Foundation & Shamakami, Shillong.
MSLSA officer on special duty, TTM Sangma in his keynote address stressed on rights of the transgender guaranteed under the Constitution\ of India, The Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019 and rulings of the Supreme Court and Delhi High Court on rights of transgender persons and the LGBTQIA community.
During the session, R. Subba, Founding Member, Shamakami spoke on the Rights of Transgender, issues faced and stigma related to being associated with LGBTQIA community.
Following the session, K. Tron, community leader shared experiences on living in the society, discrimination and problems faced as a person of the third gender/community.
The MSLSA yesterday too organised a legal awareness programme with the National Domestic Workers Movement (NDWM), Shillong which was also part of World Day for Decent Work for the Domestic workers at Lapalang.
The programme was attended by the domestic workers of Lapalang localities and its adjoining areas.
The resource persons for the programme were N.A. Khan, MHJS, District & Sessions Judge and Chairman, District Legal Services Authority, East Khasi Hills District; M. Borgohain, Legal Aid Counsel and P. Roy, Legal Aid Counsel, East Khasi Hills District.
The topics covered during the programme were Free Legal Aid, Article 21, Article 39A, Decent Work, Domestic violence, Labour laws, victim Compensation and Right to education.
After the technical sessions, dry rations were also distributed to all the participants.
