North Shillong MLA Adelbert Nongrum has called for a “farsighted” and fully responsible Home Minister, following incumbent Lahkmen Rymbui’s resignation.
Nongrum also said that Rymbui and Chief Minister Conrad Sangma should not be overly dramatic with regards to the portfolio, as it is one that is a matter of life and death.
Rymbui submitted his resignation yesterday following the killing of former militant Cherishterfield Thangkhiew by police on August 13, which has led to a severe law and order problem in Shillong. Sangma said today that he had yet to accept the resignation as he was still studying the matter.
In his letter, Rymbui said that he was not aware of the police action that led to Thangkhiew’s death in his own home. Nongrum described it as “unacceptable” for a Home Minister not to know what the police in his department are up to.
