The Public Health Centre (PHC) in Purakhasia, West Garo Hills, has been electrified solely through the use of solar energy.
Uninterrupted and sustainable power and water supply are essential for healthcare facilities, especially as the district administration is encouraging high-risk pregnant women to choose institutional delivery, for which they would have to be in-patients and stay at the facility.
The installation of the solar panels at the PHC was covered by Global Himalayan Expedition, whose aim is to bring solar energy to the remote villages of the world and which has won a United Nations award this year for its work.
The electrification was done by local technicians in order that it is sustainable in the long run. Further solar electrification, modernisation of more health centres as well as the computerisation of schools and other initiatives in Garo Hills will also be taken up by the group in time.
