One more victim was added to the death toll from Covid-19 in Meghalaya today, with the total now standing at 82.
The deceased was identified as Phul Dkhar (60) of Umpling Dongshaneng, Shillong. Hers was the 74th fatality from the virus in East Khasi Hills.
Dkhar was admitted to Shillong Civil Hospital on the afternoon of October 25 but died there that same day. A sample collected on admission came back positive for Covid. The cause of death was cardiac arrest, acute pulmonary oedema, severe anemia and hypertension.
Meanwhile, there were 70 new cases of the disease recorded in Meghalaya today, along with 172 recoveries.
With 41 new infections and 100 recoveries, East Khasi Hills’ recovery rate touched 85 per cent today. The recovery rate for the state as a whole is 83.66 per cent, which is five out of every six. Meghalaya’s Covid fatality rate is 0.9 per cent.
Apart from the 41 in East Khasi Hills, there were also 14 new infections recorded in West Garo Hills and five each in East Jaiñtia Hills, South Garo Hills and West Jaiñtia Hills.
There have now been a total of 9,136 infections from the coronavirus in Meghalaya, of which 7,536 have been reported in Khasi-Jaiñtia Hills (including Ri-Bhoi) and 1,600 in Garo Hills. East Khasi Hills alone has accounted for 5,855 (64 percent of the state total).
The recovery rate in the state has been improving of late partly because fewer positive cases are being recorded daily; only one day in the last nine has seen more than 100 new infections reported. This may be partially due to fewer tests being carried out. Yesterday only around 500 tests were carried out in the state; by comparison on the same day two weeks ago there were three times as many that were conducted.
Today’s recoveries were divided between East Khasi Hills (100), Ri-Bhoi (41), West Garo Hills (16), North Garo Hills (three), South Garo Hills (three), West Jaiñtia Hills (two) and West Khasi Hills (one).
