Shillong, Jul 2: Complaints have emerged regarding the deteriorating state of NH-6 at Ladrymbai Bridge, East Jaintia Hills District.
A resident of Khliehriat West, Arki Juh Dkhar has formally written to the Deputy Commissioner, expressing his discontent with the quick degradation of the highway’s surface after recent repair works.
Despite repairs completed merely six months ago, large potholes have reappeared, particularly on and around the bridge. The situation is exacerbated during rainfall, as these potholes become submerged and nearly invisible to drivers, significantly increasing the risk of accidents, Dkhar said. This poses a severe threat to all road users, especially vulnerable groups such as schoolchildren and pedestrians relying on this road daily, he added.
Dkhar highlighted the need for immediate inspection of the damaged sections, emphasising the importance of ensuring that the repairs adhere to proper engineering specifications and maintenance responsibilities. Furthermore, he pointed out that the guard rails near the bridge also require urgent attention, as inadequate installations could lead to catastrophic outcomes during adverse weather conditions.
Given that NH-6 is a critical transport corridor connecting Meghalaya with neighboring regions, the need for durable and safe infrastructure is paramount, Dkhar requested the administration to coordinate with the National Highways Authority of India to facilitate immediate and long-term repairs.
