Shillong, Mar 21: Project Padma Doree — a pioneering initiative blending the strength of Eri Silk from the North East with the elegance of Chanderi weaving is set to take off with the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU).
The collaboration involves the North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation (NEHHDC) and the District Archaeology, Tourism and Culture Council (DATCC) of Ashoknagar.
This amalgamation will result in a premium line of textiles, including high-end sarees, suits, dupattas, and fabric yardage. This initiative not only celebrates the distinctive qualities of two iconic Geographical Indication (GI) products but also positions itself to appeal to the global ethical luxury market.
The project will be managed locally through the District Archaeology, Tourism and Culture Council (DATCC).
Beyond just textiles, the project focuses on substantial economic empowerment for local artisans. Officials said the targeted goal is to increase artisan income by 20-25 per cent within 12 to 24 months, creating new employment opportunities across the eight states represented by NEHHDC.
Furthermore, ongoing collaboration with master weavers and self-help groups is crucial for ensuring technical excellence in production. Looking towards the future, the project is set to evolve into a permanent entity, fostering artisan ownership and long-term financial independence.
The project is slated to transition into a permanent entity, “NER-MP Handloom Fusion Private Limited,” beyond the initial five-year term, officials added.
The MoU was signed between NEHHDC Managing Director Mara Kocho and Saket Malviya, District Collector and Chairman of DATCC.
Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia commended the MoU between Eri silk and Chanderi weaving, stating that it will not only create new employment opportunities but also give global recognition to the rich traditional crafts of both regions.
He highlighted that the coming together of the Northeast and Chanderi traditions to create innovative products like ‘Padma Dori’ is a beautiful example of ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat.’ He also extended congratulations to all weavers, noting that their hard work will now reach greater heights and wider recognition.
