The Jaiñtia National Council (JNC) apprehended five suspected Bangladeshi nationals who had illegally crossed into East Jaiñtia Hills without documentation today.
The individuals were detained along the national highway. Upon investigation, they revealed that they had entered the country with the assistance of local brokers, known as dalals, who charged between Rs 1,000 and 2,000 per person, the JNC informed through a press release.
Their stated intention was to seek employment as labourers in the Umpleng area where they would find work in the cement industry. Following their interrogation, the pressure group transferred the five to police in Umtyra for further action.
The JNC criticised the Border Security Force (BSF) for failing to halt the illegal migration of these Bangladeshis and also denounced the brokers, who, for a small fee, “compromised the integrity of the community and its rights”.
Finally, the JNC issued a stern warning to those who recruit outsiders for work, urging them to reconsider their actions. The group said that a significant number of Bangladeshis have settled in the regions of Umpleng, Soo Kilo and Ladrymbai in East Jaiñtia Hills.
