Shillong, Jun 19: The office of the Chief Electoral Officer, Meghalaya, in collaboration with the India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM) conducted a workshop on the model code of conduct, aimed towards promoting ethical election practices.
The workshop was part of the thematic priorities under India’s chairmanship of International IDEA and the thematic work assigned to Meghalaya.
Election officials, political party representatives, academicians, media professionals, researchers, and other stakeholders took part in the workshop through both physical and virtual modes.
The workshop served as a platform for sharing best practices and strategies aimed at facilitating adherence to the model code of conduct. Participants engaged in discussions that fostered understanding and commitment to ethical campaign management.
The inputs received from stakeholders will contribute to the thematic document, “Model Code of Conduct for Campaigns” being prepared as part of the thematic research initiative, State Chief Electoral Officer BDR Tiwari said.
Earlier, Principal Secretary FR Kharkongor who inaugurated the event emphasised the critical importance of ethical election campaigning. He underscored that responsible political conduct is essential for strengthening public trust in democratic institutions.
Commissioner & Secretary Cyril VD Diengdoh highlighted the 6th Schedule provisions and relevant mechanism of the model code of conduct to election to Autonomous District Councils.
