The Swachhata Hi Seva Campaign in East Jaintia Hills district was today observed with the inauguration of a waste recovery centre at Latyrke.
As part of the observation of the campaign, a tree plantation drive and awareness programme on waste recovery was also organised by the District Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin).
The programme held at the Latyrke Community Hall also saw the inauguration of an additional classroom of the Latyrke Secondary School.
Sutnga-Saipung MLA, Santa Mary Shylla attended the event as guest in the presence of Deputy Commissioner Shivansh Awasthi, Executive Engineer, Electrical Division, Jowai cum Member Secretary, District Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin), East Jaintia Hills District, Paul Synnah, government officials, traditional heads and people of the area.
Shylla in her address lauded the residents of Latyrke village for their collective effort in facilitating usage of the District Mineral Fund enabling the completion of the two projects inaugurated at the programme.
Speaking on the importance of waste management, Shylla also enlightened the gathering on global warming and stressed on the importance of tree plantation. She urged people to take initiatives in environment conservation and cleanliness not only in their homes but in the community and to set a good example for future generations to emulate.
Awasthi expressed hope that the centre will not only help the residents of the village to clean their surroundings but it would aid generation of funds through waste segregation. He also urged the gathering to practice waste segregation in their homes and also to co-operate with the traditional heads in order to extract optimum benefits from the waste recovery centre.
