The War Jaintia Students’ Union has sought the intervention of Shillong MP Ricky J Syngkon to tackle infrastructure problems and project delays within the region.
The union raised six matters for the MP to take up with relevant ministries for the socio-economic welfare and development of the people in War Jaintia.
Stating that the construction of the Dawki-Amlarem stretch of the National Highway 6 is substandard, the union said that though the estimated project cost is around Rs 43 crores, the works completed appears to be worth less than Rs 43 lakhs. The road has already deteriorated drastically within a year, raising serious concerns over the quality and transparency of the project, it added.
To raise the standard of education in the region, the union urged the MP to follow up on the construction of the Eklavya Model Residential School, Amladkur which has been delayed and to ensure that the residential school at Pdengshakap is operationalised.
It also suggested setting up of the Dawki Land Customs Station Transit Point at Muktapur village to facilitate the smooth export of limestone from Syndai-Trangblang and Bataw-Lakadong belt to Bangladesh.
The union lamented that the functions of the Dawki Land Port is not satisfactory stating that instead of facilitating commerce, traders are reportedly being illegally charged Rs 1000 per truck before entering Bangladesh. “This malpractice requires the involvement of the Enforcement Directorate to investigate the over Rs 1000 crore per year of black money,” the union added.
It further sought commissioning of the Leshka Stage II Hydro Power Project as the project holds great promise for regional development and energy security.
