A day long training programme on ‘winter vegetable production under protected and open condition to increase income’ was held for farmers at Umroi Jaiaw Pdeng village under Bhoirymbong block in Ri Bhoi district today.
The programme was organised by the Krishi Vigyan Kendra Ri Bhoi (ICAR) in collaboration with Aiom Ksiar Piggery, Livestock and Agricultural Cooperative Society Limited (AKPLACSL), Umroi.
KVK head and principal scientist, Dr. M Mokidul Islam highlighted the initiatives of the KVK in uplifting livelihood of farmers through various agricultural activities and the technological backstopping available. He also emphasised on working hand in hand with various cooperative societies and SHG’s functioning in the district for wider and effective dissemination of horticultural technologies.
Headman of Bhoirymbong Lumsohping, secretary Jaiaw Pdeng and Dr. D. C. Maring, President, BJP Kishan Morcha, Umroi Mandal also spoke about the needs and expectations of the farmers from the KVK Ri bhoi.
Dr. Utpal Barua, SMS Horticulture, KVK Ribhoi interacted with the 36 trainees on various issues of horticultural crops like nursery raising, vegetable cultivation under polyhouse, land preparation techniques, fertilizer application and prophylactic measures to be taken against insect and disease attack, crop selection, seed selection and importance of proper time of sowing and harvesting to maximise profit. Seeds of garden pea, cabbage, turnip, coriander, spinach, french bean and carrot were provided to the trainees at the end of the programme.
Trichoderma and pseudomonas powders were also provided for seeds treatment and soil application to protect against seed and soil borne pathogens.
