The BJP in Garo Hills celebrated the Janjaatiya Gaurav Diwas or tribal pride day on the occasion of the 146 birth anniversary of Bhaghawan Birsa Munda , the tribal freedom fighter at Hatisil Bollongre village under Ampati in South West Garo Hills yesterday.
The event took place to coincide with the birth anniversary of Birsa Munda, the tribal freedom fighter, who was commemorated by the PM, Narendra Modi, on his birth anniversary.
Munda was an Indian tribal freedom fighter, religious leader, and folk hero who belonged to the Munda tribe. He spearheaded a tribal religious millenarian movement that arose in the Bengal Presidency (now Jharkhand) in the late 19th century, during the British Raj, thereby making him an important figure in the history of the Indian independence movement. He is the only tribal leader whose portrait hangs in the walls of the Indian Parliament.
State party Vice President Bakul Hajong attended the programme as the Chief Guest in the presence of various party leaders and Karyakarthas. The occasion was also celebrated in over 7500 villages all across the country. The event was organized by the state ST Morcha president, Boston Marak along with secretary, Huberth Arengh.
According to a release issued here, the party plans to organize more such events in other districts and villages till November 22.
“We watched the PM during his program at Bhopal through television and wanted to thank him for recognizing the contributions of Birsa Munda and giving him his rightful due, on behalf of the Morcha,” said former MDC and CEM of GHADC, Boston Marak.
