Traditional leaders of Raid Marwet in Ri-Bhoi, today expressed their discontentment and unwillingness to accept the border deal between Meghalaya and Assam as it regards their areas.
The decision to oppose the deal was taken after the traditional chiefs met today with the local Rangbah Shnongs from seven villages along Ri-Bhoi’s Assam border.
During the meeting, Ken Syiem, traditional chief ot Raid Marwet, expressed his unhappiness and unwillingness with the statement made by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma in his speech earlier this week when he said that a few villages under Raid Marwet, comprising those located at Maikhuli, Khanapara, Pillangkata and Patharkuchi will be handed over to Assam.
According to Syiem, some lands in these areas, including the Dreamland Amusement Park and Assam State Transport Corporation transit camp, legally belong to Meghalaya.
