Acting on a tip-off, a tourist taxi driver was apprehended by police in Ri-Bhoi on suspicion of being involved in smuggling of marijuana from Shillong to Guwahati.
This arrest took place today at around 6:45am when the Byrnihat police stopped the vehicle (ML 05 J 5714) at the toll gate at 20th Mile while on its way to Guwahati.
The driver, identified as Pyndapbiang Marwein (27) is from Umktieh village. He was arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
Marwein and the vehicle were taken to the Byrnihat Police Outpost.
Police credited the residents of Pahammawlein village in helping police in combating the drugs menace. Ri-Bhoi police had conducted an awareness campaign in the village about drug abuse recently.
