The Border Security Force (BSF) arrested 11 Indian nationals while they were transporting more than 11 tonnes of sugar meant to be smuggled into Bangladesh.
The incident took place on the night of June 6 and involved personnel of the 4th Battalion of the BSF, who were deployed in the area around Muktapur.
The border troops intercepted the vehicles while they were on their way from Amlarem, West Jaiñtia Hills, towards the international border.
The suspected smugglers could not provide any valid documentation to prove the legitimacy of the transportation and were thus detained by the BSF and the seized goods were handed over to Customs officials in Dawki for further action.
Since October 2022, the BSF has seized more than 300 tonnes of sugar while being smuggled to Bangladesh through the international border in Meghalaya, a BSF press release stated today, adding that a hike in the price of sugar in Bangladesh has driven the demand for Indian sugar.
