Police in East Garo Hills seized a cache of arms and ammunition buried in a thick jungle near Chikama village under Rongjeng police station today.
The recovery includes a country-made pistol, 212 suspected live AK ammunition, 22 suspected anti-aircraft ammunition, 13 damaged anti-aircraft ammunition without pellets, 11 loose pellets and 52 6.5 mm live ammunition.
According to East Garo Hills Superintendent of Police, Stephen A Rynjah, acting on reliable intelligence a police team from Williamnagar and Rongjeng Police Station led by an Additional Superintendent of Police, combed the forest from 11:30 pm on Monday.
At about 2 am today, the team unearthed a cache of arms and ammunition buried in the jungle, he said.
Police suspect that the seized arms and ammunition may belong to the erstwhile Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA), a banned militant organisation that was active in the region and the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA).
The recovered items were seized and investigation is on.
