The ruling NPP has conceded the electoral defeat in both Tura and Shillong parliamentary seats.
“We humbly accept and respect the mandate of the people,” wrote Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on X today after the results were announced.
Sangma also wrote, “We humbly accept and respect the mandate of the people and wish Mr Saleng A Sangma and Mr Ricky Andrew J. Syngkon the very best.”
The defeat has shocked the NPP so much so that none of the party leaders appeared in the media to comment on the loss. A party leader who wants to remain anonymous said he was “stunned” by the poll results.
What the NPP is trying to fathom is the loss in the Tura seat where the party won 18 seats out of 24 in the Assembly elections held in 2023.
Saleng A. Sangma was the lone Congress MLA from Garo Hills.
Another bitter experience of the NPP is the loss of Shillong parliamentary seat where the party has nine MLAs out of 36 Assembly constituencies.
The VPP whose candidate Ricky A J Syngkon won the Shillong seat this time has only four MLAs.
