Only 1,837 out of 3,815 of those who sat for the NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) in Meghalaya this year passed it, the fifth-lowest pass percentage (48.15 per cent) in the country.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) announced the results of the medical entrance exam today.
There were reported discrepancies that dogged the undergraduate medical studies test in the state in at least two examination centres in Jowai and Nongpoh, though whether it had any bearing on the results is unknown. Last year, Meghalaya’s pass rate was 49.01 per cent.
The alleged discrepancies included two different sets of exam papers being handed out to students, admit cards not being collected and proper instructions not being given to students, the last which reportedly led to some not being able to finish the test.
Meghalaya’s pass percentage this year was higher only than Assam (47.71 per cent), Madhya Pradesh (45.67 per cent), Mizoram (47.75 per cent) and Tripura (47.31 per cent).
The top scorer from Meghalaya was Kashish Samee, a female candidate in the general category who scored a commendable 99.834269. The competition was so close, however, that even that percentile was only enough to give her a ranking of 3,732 nationally.
Overall, a total of 23,33,297 candidates appeared out of which 13,16,268 passed the exam. The pass percentage was almost the same as last year at 56.41 per cent.
The all-India first rank has been shared by a record 67 students, all of whom scored 99.997129. One of these was from the North East, Tripura’s Chand Mallik (male, Scheduled Caste category).
