The Meghalaya High Court has given the State government time to conduct an inquiry into the alleged illegal mining of limestone in Jaintia Hills by the Amrit Cement Company.
A division bench of Chief Justice Indra Prasanna Mukerji and Justice Wanlura Diengdoh was hearing a PIL filed by Ranjit Chandra Goswami that the company did not have any license for mining of limestone.
The court also directed the government that in the course of inquiry, all the necessary parties should be given a hearing by the inquiry officer.
In its earlier order, the court had directed the State government to treat the petition as an informal complaint, make the necessary inquiry and file a report.
“On the prayer of learned Advocate for the State, time to make and conclude the inquiry is extended,” the court said and asked the government to file a report by July 2, 2025.
The PIL will come up for hearing on July 10, 2025.
